The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
Solid, but not enough to warrant you skipping the Swedish version.
I was very excited to see David Fincher’s version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, but it left me wanting more and I ended up just simply liking it. It’s not that it underwhelmed, it’s that it didn’t overwhelm. It was more of the same from what I had previously seen, but with a more convoluted delivery.
Stylistically and visually I liked Fincher’s version more than it’s predecessor, and Rooney Mara shined as Lisbeth Salander. Attention to detail really showed how she took the role and absolutely owned it. The scene in the Vanger archives is one of many that stuck out for me. Especially when the records keeper tries to hand Lisbeth a box from the ladder. Instead, Lisbeth stares blankly, forcing the records keeper to climb down the ladder with the box in hand. Stellan Skarsgård was also solid as usual (the whole cast was spot on for that matter). It’s hard to point the finger at one particular issue with this movie, but ultimately I would choose the original Swedish version.
I was hoping Trent Reznor’s score would wow me, but it didn’t. Reznor’s remix of “Immigrant Song” with Karen O was clearly the highlight; but the opening credits that accompanied it were a little too much. They may have tried too hard with the opening credits and instead ended up with a mash up the Matrix and some broad fucking around in a vat of Mercury.
Where this film really gains steam is in the appearances by a bad guy from Beverly Hills Cop department. The original definitely lacked in that category.
Having said all of that, if you are unfamiliar with the story it is still worth seeing. Just be weary of the sometimes slow pacing and merkins.
Bale To Star As Villain In Oldboy?
Spike Lee is still the worst and I hate the idea. But Christian Bale playing the role as the villain in an Oldboy remake would be badass.
No! No! No!
Tony Scott to direct a remake of The Wild Bunch? Ugh… he’s not even the talented Scott brother.
just got the script for Diablo Cody’s Evil Dead remake..
My biggest fear.

Pingu’s The Thing Remake
This short claymation remake of The Thing is awesome… probably much better than the Hollywood remake.
Tons Of Kurosawa Flicks Coming?
I actually want to see a really good remake of High & Low. Yeah, straight up. The movie is so good, I think it’s story needs to be seen and not enough people are willing to sit through a Japanese subtitled movie… but this news is fucking absurd.
The Weinstein’s are apparently trying to get a remake of Seven Samurai done (not needed since we already have The Magnificent Seven). Beyond that, Splendent Media has acquired the rights to no less than 69 titles. The properties include 26 of the films Kurosawa directed such as Rashomon, Yojimbo, Dreams, Kagemusha and plenty more. The deal also includes 24 films he wrote but did not direct, and 19 screenplays that never made it in front of a camera.
High and Low, Drunken Angel and Ikiru are already in some sort of stage of development, so they will not be a part of the rights acquired by Splendent.
I don’t hate the idea of seeing Kurosawa’s 19 other projects that never made it to film. I’d be down for that.
